The first known record of the name “Marienviertel” is from 1727 and refers to St. Marienkirche, a church located in this historic area. Before the turn of the twentieth century, the site of the hotel, at the corner of Rosenstraße and Anna-Louisa-Karsch-Straße, was home to several small buildings.
In 1898, the fur trader Siegfried Abrahamsohn purchased the plot. The old buildings were demolished and a large complex of commercial buildings was constructed. Completed in 1900, the building at Rosenstraße 1 forms the core of the current hotel
The buildings on the site were home to Pelzhandel Abrahamsohn and a dealer of electrical goods. In 1933 they were joined by the watch-making cooperative Alpina (later Dugena).
Despite significant bomb damage during the Second World War, the company remained at the location in makeshift premises until 1953.
When it finally left, it was replaced by GHG Technik Berlin (Großhandelsgesellschaft für Technik Berlin), which remained until 1990.

Lead architect Peter Becker’s goal was to reconstruct the original facade from 1900, with its striking corner tower, as closely as possible, and connect it with the neighbouring, modern office building. The result was a uniquely elegant blend of modern design and restored historic elements from the art deco period.
After the topping-out ceremony in 1996, the hotel opened in summer 1997. Since then it has dynamically combined old and new, tradition and modernity – making it a true Berlin native.
